The best you have ever felt doesn’t translate to a lack of stress, a lack of problems, or being in extreme comfort.
I believe the best I have ever felt is during the times directly after extreme stress. The moments following a competition, the moments when I sit back in my chair after finishing a hard work-related task and just breathe.
Scientifically this is the time between "Alostasis" and "Homeostasis".
Homeostasis is defined as “the tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes” (Google dictionary). Basically meaning its when everything is balanced at rest.
Alostasis is the maintenance of an up-regulated or adapted homeostasis during heightened physical (activity), mental (psychological), or biological (lack of food or temperature change) stress.
In the depths of discomfort (physical, mental or biological), you are your best self, and if you never go there you have no idea of your true potential.
Alostasis is not sustainable forever, and we have to be cautious, chronic stress is harmful, the constant movement will kill you without rest and too much of a biological change and you are also dead.
I can feel a challenge coming on next week…
